The Santa Marta Collector Adds Drainage Capacity
The canal’s existing capacity is 14 cubic meters per second. The new collector adds another 4 cubic meters per second, increasing current capacity by 29 percent. During the weather front, that additional route carried rising flow away from the vulnerable road corridor.
This first operation matters because it tested the infrastructure under the condition it was built to manage. The outcome is specific: the collector carried the excess flow and the canal did not overflow onto Camino a Melipilla during that event. It does not establish how the system will perform in every future storm.
The First 466 Meters Begin a Larger Canal Project
The operating section is only the first stage of a planned 5,544-meter project. A second stage is intended to extend 1,387 meters immediately downstream, with a third stage planned afterward. The project’s long-term protective value therefore depends on completing the wider sequence, not only on the successful first test.
The development shows the practical value of staged resilience works. A completed segment can deliver an immediate protective function while later phases extend the intervention. Clear stage boundaries also make it possible to distinguish what has already operated from what remains planned.
