These digital tools provide utilities with a comprehensive view of network performance, supporting better planning and demand forecasting.

Many cities facing water scarcity and population growth rely on smart water meters to enhance long-term supply resilience. High-resolution consumption data helps utilities model future demand, assess peak-use periods, and design targeted conservation programs. Their ability to deliver accurate, real-time data positions them as essential tools for efficient, transparent, and adaptive water management in an era of increasing water stress.

Case Study: Yorkshire Water’s Smart Metering Programme

Yorkshire Water is undertaking one of the UK’s largest smart water meter upgrades, aiming to replace 1.3 million existing meters across the region. The program, expected to begin in South Yorkshire in 2025 pending Ofwat’s final determination, aims to improve customer service, strengthen leakage detection, and enhance long-term water security. Covering major areas including Sheffield, Barnsley, Rotherham, Wakefield, Doncaster, Leeds, Bradford, Harrogate, York, Hull, Halifax, Darlington, and Huddersfield, the rollout will continue through to 2029, replacing older meters—primarily those installed before 2020—with connected, real-time devices.

The transition to smart metering is designed to support more accurate billing, greater customer transparency, and real-time insights into water demand patterns. With hourly readings, the new meters enable Yorkshire Water to detect continuous flows that commonly indicate leaks, both within the distribution network and on customers’ properties. Since launching initial deployments in 2022, the utility has already saved 500,000 liters of water by identifying and addressing customer-side leakage, demonstrating the technology’s potential at scale.

Operationally, the program is delivered through partnerships with Netmore, responsible for installing, commissioning, and maintaining the smart meters and their connectivity, and Morrison Water Services, which manages customer appointments and on-the-ground exchanges. Most meters will be replaced in the same location—typically external chambers in roads, footpaths, or gardens, or indoors near the property’s first tap.

Beyond service improvements, Yorkshire Water expects environmental benefits, including reduced chemical use in treatment, lower carbon emissions from fewer meter-reading trips, and better protection of regional water resources. The expanded smart metering network forms a core component of Yorkshire Water’s long-term strategy to halve leakage by 2050 and deliver a more efficient, resilient water system for the region.
